Strengths
A multidisciplinary approach, an all-star faculty and an emphasis on experimentation that helps students push boundaries and strive for truly innovative design solutions
Overview
Established in 1982 by a group of design world elites, including Alessandro Mendini and Andrea Branzi, the Domus program gives students front-row access to some of the most illustrious creative minds in Italy. The demanding Masters course is charted to “foster a new professional who combines techniques and design knowledge with cultural sensitivity and strategic thinking.” Besides providing aesthetic training, the school tries to breed an understanding for the social and cultural aspects of living spaces. It also delves into the influence of emerging technologies and communications, grooming students (a past mentor was Spanish furniture and interior designer Patricia Urquiola) in the practical side of processes and project management. Through the school’s Metaphysical Club, various luminaries – from curator Hans-Ulrich Obrist to designer-architect Italo Rota – give lectures, run workshops and introduce students to professional networks.
