IDS 2015: 3 Exciting Reasons to Hit the Show

The Interior Design Show brings together many of the world's top brands with talented up-and-comers when it takes over Toronto from January 22 to 25. Here are three features that have us stoked (hint: Luca Nichetto, exciting prototypes and fab furniture brands).

The most anticipated design event in Canada, the Interior Design Show kicks off with an opening night gala on Thursday, January 22. Over the weekend, the design industry will commingle at the Metro Convention Centre in downtown Toronto during a three-day weekend filled with events (complemented by design shows around town at the Toronto Offsite Design Festival). Here’s a sneak peek at some of the exhibits and products we’ll be keen to check out at the fair.

1 Feature exhibit: Cubitat
Toronto condo developer Urban Capital and Italian designer Luca Nichetto will present a new take on the micro dwelling. Their fully integrated and multi-disciplinary module takes the form of a three-metre cube with plug-and-play elements that seamlessly reveal and conceal the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, entertaining and storage areas. Shown in rough sketches here, this approach to condo living combines architecture with interior and furniture design.

2 Young designers at Studio North and Prototype
The gallery-like environment of Studio North is a celebration of all things independent, beautiful and for the most part Canadian. This curated collection from emerging practitioners includes the Jube pendant by Normal Goods (Toronto designers Chris Charuk and Tomas Rojcik) and seating options by Studio Lulo, including the modular Cosmo sofa and the Mia swivel chair. At Prototype, showgoers get the chance to see experimental works by a select roster of emerging talents seeking manufacturers. Among them: the Coude lounge by Evan Bare and Aaron Duke, and Light W8 by Paunil Studio.

3 Exciting furniture manufacturers from around the world
From seating to flooring options, IDS will display the latest products on the market. New York carpet maker Kinder Ground will show off eco-friendly and durable hexagonal tiles made from New Zealand wool and EcoNet (a combination of rubber and jute). And the Italian textile house Missoni Home has partnered with Dutch company Artifort for Patch One, a bold and beautiful seating line that includes this patchwork chair, in fabric and leather with oak legs.

Meanwhile, urbanites are rejoicing at AGA’s latest offering: a relaunch of its iconic City60 British cooker to fit compact spaces. The 60-centimetre-wide cast iron double oven still offers radiant-heat technology.
