From January to June, 2016, the Netherlands has taken on the EU Presidency, hosting hundreds of meetings for high-level officials over the six-month stint. The host country opted for a single location to hold meetings and surprisingly, it’s a temporary structure, built by Dutch company Neptunus. The eco-conscious building, located beside the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam, was purpose-built for the country’s tenure. But it’s not as bare bones as it may sound. It’s full of pattern, colour, not to mention a lot of Moroso.

To craft an interior worthy of the prestigious group, Studio Edward van Vliet tapped into Dutch history – cultural and decorative – with an eye-popping space saturated in cobalt blue. The result is both historic and futuristic, an unexpected merging that ignites the space. A no-holds-barred blue and white palette certainly nods to Delft designs, coating floors and furniture in a unifying palette. There is even a display of 17th-century porcelain in glass cabinets, that when set alone inside the vast modern setting, takes on new meaning. This isn’t your Nana’s delftware.

Van Vliet crafted an exceptional round table meeting room harnessing the idea of a cloudscape in the process. A celestial carpet and sputnik-inspired fixtures continue the otherworldly aesthetic. Moroso is everywhere with pieces from their Sushi collection, which was designed by Edward van Vliet for the Italian brand. Pieces from the collection, including the Juju armchair, Karmakoma sofa and Block seating, are upholstered in new patterns custom-designed by the studio for the prestigious project.
