Two years ago, Ikea began working with 10 designers from African countries – a collaboration that was kicked off during the 2017 Design Indaba Festival in Cape Town. The idea for the collection, whose name translates to “everywhere”, was to explore modern urban rituals – regarding food, indoor and outdoor living, identity and sustainability – and their importance in the home setting. Now ready for its spotlight, the line will be shown at this year’s Design Indaba conference, taking place February 27 to March 1.

Working under the creative leadership of Ikea’s James Futcher and together with its in-house talent, the collection’s designers are Selly Raby Kane, Issa Diabaté and Renee Rossouw, as well as Laduma Ngxokolo, Bethan Rayner and Naeem Biviji (Studio Propolis), Hend Riad and Mariam Hazem (Reform Studio), Sindiso Khumalo and Bibi Seck. The pieces they’ve created range from seating to glassware and textiles.

“With Överallt, we want to encourage and trigger people to come together and eat, share stories, be creative and spend time with one another. And, thanks to the merging of creatives and all the good discussions we’ve had along the way, each design has a way of supporting that. Överallt is like a palette of socializing tools,” Futcher explains in the company’s press release.

The limited edition collection will be available in all Ikea markets in May 2019.
