The contemporary kitchen is more than just a kitchen. It’s where we cook, of course, but it is also a place to break bread, to socialize and linger. Indeed, the kitchen has evolved into a veritable living space. In recent years, designers of residential and hospitality projects and their clients have been demanding more functionality and flexibility from kitchens. Oversized islands double as work surfaces, cabinets and open shelving also serve as vitrines for books, sculptures and prized objects, and the material palette itself has evolved to reflect the textures in the rest of the home.

Kitchen design is a reflection of the homeowner’s personality. And accordingly, manufacturers and designers are creating systems that underline this exciting possibility. Elegante Bespoke by Snaidero USA is one such example. The collection includes five customizable lines of cabinetry that feature subtle design details and surprising finishes, all aimed at augmenting warmth and character. Don’t expect to find cold minimalism, here.

“The collection is for designers who want to create homes that feel exclusive and uniquely personal – places that wow from every angle,” says Dario Snaidero, president and CEO of Snaidero USA. “This means flowing, architecturally modern spaces punctuated by different stylistic influences that are part of the homeowner’s unique story.”

“The more drama and texture you can bring to the kitchen,” he adds, “the better.”

The flair for the dramatic is evident throughout the Elegante Bespoke Collection, which boasts an Italian heritage yet was designed exclusively for the Americas. Available in five exclusive wood options, the collection consists of elegant geometric forms and captures the demand for dark, exotic or unpolished wood finishes. Each of the Elegante-exclusive wood finishes can be paired with a variety of lacquers as well as ceramic, glass, melamine and laminate finishes to create a truly custom look.

Elements assemble into base cabinets, open shelving, vitrines, doors and kitchen islands. “It gives the homeowner total freedom of expression to create a truly unique composition,” says Dario Snaidero. “It’s a canvas that can be complemented by rare finds and curated items.”

Dario Snaidero says that the wooden finishes – each with “its own distinct character” – anchor the collection. They offer different benefits: Heartwood, taken from the innermost part of a tree, is an eco-friendly material that delivers a raw aesthetic. Rosewood yields timeless cabinets, and it’s sure to be a favourite among mid-century enthusiasts. Fume’ Eucalyptus, with a reddish intensity and rippled grain, delivers sensuality. Night Eucalyptus and Pearl Eucalyptus (below) provide subtler textures and colours, and could match well with grey lacquers or stainless steel. “Wood,” muses Dario Snaidero, “gives us a connection to nature. It commands and fills a space like no other finish.”

Dario Snaidero says the Elegante Bespoke collection is a response to the evolution of the modern kitchen, though it remains true to the brand’s Italian heritage. “Functional and aesthetic preferences can vary,” he says. “But Italian design and the value of ‘Made in Italy’ are known and appreciated around the world.”
