At the Village Juicery, wellness is a commandment. It offers up such cold-pressed juices as Be Active and Be Radiant, and handmade nut milks like Be Happy. Its new shop in Toronto’s Roncesvalles neighbourhood – and the second location designed by Mason Studio – also comes with a message. The uncluttered and elegant space induces one to simply be serene.

The interior boasts a number of striking yet subtle moves. The round-edged bar is clad in oak dowels cut in half, their natural colour variations creating a random ribbed pattern. A metal and steel LED light fixture, shaped like a T-bar, complements the softness of the rounded dowels with its raw, industrial aspect.

A tray sporting a trio of juice bottles is suspended off a pulley that attaches into the light system – and is then propped on a soapstone display. “It’s a quirky nod at how important the juice is and that it holds its own,” explains Mason’s Stanley Sun.

Rubbed with natural oil and featuring a hammered finish, the bar top’s soapstone surfaces make a dramatic contrast against the interior’s predominant neutral shades, which also includes the branding system behind the bar – made up of flexible signage promoting seasonal drinks and specials.

Towards the back of the 800-square-foot space, Mason Studio created a seating area with custom furnishings; the juicery likes to host community events and welcomes families with small children. So a pegboard wall allows for posters to be pinned up, and a bookshelf based on a simple joinery system offers up good reads. A friendly neighbourhood spot doesn’t get more welcoming than that.
