The Social Sciences Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for a full-time Lecturer 3 in the Environmental and Urban Studies Program. The appointment is a for an initial two-year term beginning September 1, 2019. The lecturer will be an essential part of the University’s Environmental and Urban Studies Program, where students address issues of urban sustainability through focused interdisciplinary coursework and research. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to urban issues incorporating models and methods from the humanities, social, and natural sciences.

The Lecturer will teach six courses or the equivalent each academic year, comprising required and elective courses in the Environmental and Urban Studies Program as well as at least one course in the Social Sciences Core. Environmental and Urban Studies courses will cover topics such as sustainable urban development, community design, urban housing, and race and inequality. The Lecturer will develop coursework that contributes to the Environmental and Urban Studies core curriculum and builds learning experiences that engage students with relevant professional communities; supervise internships and experiential programs; and serve as a designated advisor on undergraduate thesis projects as well as in independent studies.

This position requires a Ph.D. in a Geography, Planning, Sustainability, or a related field; practitioner experience; and an excellent record of teaching and mentoring in at least one field relevant to environmental and/or urban studies. Candidates should demonstrate a broad range of urban sustainability interests, which may include built form, urban institutions and governance, or urban culture and society.
