Strengths
Overview
Accommodating students at all study levels, the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Kansas has both ample facilities (including the sprawling off-site East Hills Design-Build Center, a 63,000-square-foot resource boasting four kitted-out design-build studios, wood and metal shops, an indoor assembly area for modular buildings and more) and academic offerings. A new Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture & Design is designed to feed into the MArch. The Master of Arts in Architecture and the PhD are post-professional, research-based programs that build academic and scholarly perspective in a specific area. Global-study programs also immerse students in historic and modern architecture around the world, although KU’s biggest draw is close to home. In their final year, 20 masters candidates can apply to participate in “a boot camp” devoted to bringing a single ambitious project to fruition per year (to date, nine LEED Platinum projects and three Passive House-certified projects have been completed).
